Hannah Fleck, PE, LEED AP BD+C | Civil Engineer & Sustainability Lead
Hannah contributes to JQOL in many ways. Not only is she a civil engineer, she is also the sustainability lead for JQOL. March is Women’s History Month and Hannah has interviewed several women in the industry regarding challenges and opportunities in the workplace. In the below article, Hannah shares what she found.
Quality of Life is in our name at JQOL. We talk about quality of life in relation to the work that civil engineers do and how keeping our work/life balance affects our personal quality of life. Work/life balance is a particularly difficult dynamic for women in the workforce. Over the course of the global pandemic the demands of home have escalated and participation of women in the workforce is at 33 year low. As we transition back into our physical workplaces it would benefit every company to better understand the challenges that are unique to women in the workforce.
I asked myself and female colleagues what the biggest challenge is they experience as a woman in the A/E/C industry and what’s the biggest opportunity to overcome or break down these barriers. These are the key takeaways.
There are big and small ways that a company can encourage a supportive work environment for women. I’m proud to work for a company where Quality of Life is in the name and culture. JQOL has encouraged me to grow, succeed, be heard, and amplify my voice. This blog post is a testament to that.
